THE TE MANIA ANGUS STORY
82 years of cutting-edge Angus breeding 30 years of on-property sales
The Te Mania Angus gene pool began in New Zealand 82 years ago, extending into Australia in 1971. Since then it has set, or still holds, every Australian Angus sales record.
With Te Mania Angus genetics arriving in Australia, the gene pool was accelerated into a new era, pioneering objective measurement in the industry, with its cattle performance recorded since 1950.
Our new base at Mortlake, which has long been the home of the female herd, is now where all the cattle are run at the one site - sires, sale bulls, bull calves, females, recipients and donor cows. We will host the first Mortlake bull sale in the 100 year old Woolshed on March 19, 2010.
Te Mania Angus has brought a breeding strategy and management program into a cohesive operation which continues to dominate Angus Group Breedplan, representing more than double the number of trait leaders of any other stud.
This is also a program which has produced super sires such as Te Mania Kelp K207 and Te Mania Unlimited U3271, Te Mania Ulong U41 and is now represented by the stunning Te Mania Berkley B1.
Te Mania Berkley B1 is the result of a 10-year program to breed an outcross sire with great phenotype, length, strength and thickness, utilising information obtained from an intense progeny test programme.
He is the Number 1 ranked sire on Australasian Angus Group Breedplan for the Longfed/CAAB $Index, currently recording $156. He is also the highest-ranking bull for the Heavy Grassfed Steer $Index and the Shortfed Domestic $Index.
Te Mania Angus protocol is that all cattle are stringently - and independently - assessed for structure. With the results published alongside each bull in all sale catalogues.
Te Mania Angus can deliver calving ease and be commercially profitable with the fast-growing, high-marbling bulls wanted by the feedlot industry, processors, and, most crucially, consumers.
The family business has developed a programme in improving the accuracy of the information provided to all clients that goes above and beyond that expected by the rest of the industry.
Team Te Mania is at the heart of this commitment.
We do this by keeping animals together in large contemporary groups to achieve more effective progeny in each group which can then be compared in one environment.
The phenotype (what you see) is made up of the genotype (inherited factors) plus the environment (all other factors). If we put animals in large groups where the environment is the same, then we can compare genotypes.
We also progeny test a significant cast of sires each year - both on-property and through the Team Te Mania commercial progeny test herds.
Sires such as Te Mania Berkley B1, Te Mania Africa A217, Te Mania Yorkshire Y347, and many others, have sons in this year's autumn sale team as well as steer half brothers in the Team Te Mania herds, spread across SA, Victoria and NSW.
These progeny test herds contribute valuable information on sires, which further increases the accuracy of the sale bulls, through the sire line.
Whilst this is a time consuming and expensive program, Te Mania Angus remains committed to this principle - and its success is clearly reflected in Breedplan and in demand from major feedlots for Te Mania Angus blood steers.
